I've always wondered, where do you draw the line between "I'm good at lying" and "that person is good at being lied to"? I've never considered myself to be very good at lying, but it seems everyone else still falls
for it just the same. So is it that I underestimate my ability to deceive? Or that I overestimate other peoples odds of detecting deception? People who try to come back to online games under new identities is a great
example of this, I've always thought it was fairly simple to avoid being found out as long as you had a small amount of functioning brain cells. Don't pick a name that obviously relates to your old one, don't say things
that you would obviously say, walk in different circles of people, etc. Not exactly hard, even in a game where you use IRC or some other method where people can find out your IP, if you walk in sufficiently different circles
or use Vhosts/other IP masking tools, it's not difficult. Yet many people seem to find it difficult and even complain that it is not easy enough, is it that I'm underestimating the difficulty of this task, or overestimating the
ability of others?
Of course on the internet it is more difficult to detect dishonesty, you cannot see the persons face, cannot hear their voice, cannot watch their body language. But surely this should make it easier to deceive others, so why still
do some people find it so much more difficult? I know I seem to be mixing topics here, but I find they're both very much combined. My ability to be invisible vs other peoples inability to be, my ability to lie vs other peoples
problems with hiding the truth.
I wonder if there is any way in which to test which is correct? Lie to a group of people and see how many believe you vs how many don't? Tell a group of people various lies and see at which point they start to detect the fact that
they're being lied to? Have a group of people lie to me and see how many I pick out correctly? Would certainly be interesting to try and find out where the line between "I'm good at this" and "you're bad at this" is.
IRC Quote of the day
While the gold trophy was pretty much decided from the time it happened, we've still had good competition for silver and bronze:
Announcing todays bronze trophy.....Rulesaints/Vesta for 'drunk phone'
Announcing todays silver trophy.....Nici/Vesta for 'bacon'
But todays gold trophy goes to.....Vesta/Rulesaints/Cyphon/Vlad for 'pennies'
f you have a quote which you feel should be a contender for our next QoTD, why not send it to me?
Quote of the day
This is for quotes that are from anywhere other than IRC. If you have a quote which you feel should be a contender for posting, why not send it to me?
Todays QoTD is brought to you by '1001 things Mr. Raymond can't do when he GMs':
492. You will not allow any character to make a seduction roll on any other character.
493. Especially if the character is another species!
494. You will not allow any player to make a seduction roll on any other player
495. You won't REQUIRE it, either.
496. And dear lord, characters are NEVER allowed to make a seduction roll on a player... The paper cuts alone boggle the mind.
497. That goes double for a character seducing their own player
498. If I ever again get to the point where characters are trying to seduce players, I need to hang up my screen.
This concludes todays post, make sure to check back soon for more of...*insert stupid theme tune here*...Vlad's Musings!!!
